The chainsaw may be a powerful tool but it requires maintenance in order to avoid any really costly repairs. It’s important to take care of your chainsaw, ensuring it can last for years in the future. The key to keeping it working optimally is to pay attention to the little details on your saw.
SO TENSE In maintaining your chainsaw you should always make certain the chain tension is correct in order to promise safe operation. If the chain begins to wear and stretch, then it becomes unsafe for the operator and very difficult to use.
’OIL-FFICIENT’ Next is to upkeep the chain’s oiling system as oil keeps friction between the bar and chain –this allows for the individual chain links to operate at high speed, making your job more efficient.
GOT A SCREW LOOSE? Your chainsaw is hard on itself — with its power it can vibrate significantly. A necessary step is to always check all the screws and keep them tightened. If the screws of the saw are loose it may lead to other problems in the system. And in the winter, keep any anti-vibration system free of ice and snow that may lead to further operator fatigue.
LET THE AIR FLOW Replace your air filter regularly — the air filter system is an important part of the fueling as the air flow allows for your saw run cooler and use less fuel. Keep the air intake free of snow, ice, and sawdust as well.
EVEN-ING WEAR Make sure you turn your guide bar after ten hours of use to promote even wear pattern at the bottom of the guide bar. The even wear ensures a proper smooth cut from your chain saw.
These are just a few things you should do to maintain your chainsaw and avoid repair. Your chainsaw is one of the hardest working tools – use these simple tips and look after this workhorse to keep it running its best.

Greg German
Owner, German-Bliss
Family: I’ve been very happily married for 21 years; we have four children (21, 17, 11, 6)
Community involvement: When not spending time with my family or at work, I am very involved in our church (Northwoods Community Church, Peoria, IL) I serve on our Board of Elders and also am chairman of our Mission Board. Really enjoy the work I can do in both those capacities. Each year I spend 1-2 weeks in the Dominican Republic and Israel with different ministry partners working on construction, medical, or other mission teams.
Have been working at LE German since 1986, starting fresh out of college at the University of Illinois.
Proudest moment of my career: Celebrating the 50th anniversary of our dealership with both my father and my grandfather in 1990. My grandfather, L.E. German started our dealership in 1940. He has since passed away, but my father, Charles German, is still involved. I have been blessed with great role models who have allowed me the opportunity to try new things… and even if it didn’t work out as planned, they never said “I told you so”.
Co-workers say I’m: Pretty easy going and try to be encouraging in every situation.
Customers think we’re: Very customer service-driven. We are fortunate to have employees who hold the same high standards of taking care of customers that I do, as did my father and his father before him. We talk a lot about the importance of making sure that every customer contact is a positive one so that people want to come back time and again.
My advice to someone just starting out in Equipment Sales & Services: Work for another successful dealer for a while before venturing out on your own. Know what you know and don’t try to be all things to all people. Define your niche and be the best at it before you expand onto the next thing.
Favorite quote: “You can’t sell out of an empty wagon.” One of many quotes my grandfather would recite to me when we were discussing if we should stock more inventory.
